Exterior guide 02 · Budget with confidence
Understand the price.
Plan your project.
Size is only the starting point. Preparation, access, materials and the surfaces you choose all shape your exterior painting estimate.

A useful price starts with a clear scope.
Two homes with the same floor area can require very different exterior painting work. Wall height, surface condition, access and the number of details all affect the job. An online estimate helps you plan; the walkthrough confirms what your home actually needs.
What gets painted?
Walls, trim, fascia, soffits, doors and porch ceilings each add to the scope.
What needs attention?
Cleaning, loose paint, repairs and priming affect the preparation required.
What is the plan?
Products, colors, coat count and access shape the labor and materials.
Six details that change the estimate
- Paintable area. We measure the surfaces being coated. Your indoor floor area is not the same as the exterior wall area.
- Height and access. Upper walls, gables, tight side yards and landscaping can affect setup and working time.
- Preparation. A sound, clean surface requires a different scope from one with failing coating or damaged areas.
- Primer or sealer. The proposal should identify any needed product and the surfaces that receive it.
- Finish details. Multiple colors, doors, trim and porch ceilings add work beyond the main walls.
- Materials and application. Product selection, surface texture, coverage and the agreed coat count affect the material and labor allowance.
Compare what the estimates include.
Ask each painter to describe the same scope so the totals are easier to compare.
- Which walls, doors, trim and ceilings are included?
- What cleaning and surface preparation are allowed for?
- Which repairs are included, and how are added repairs priced?
- Where will primer or sealer be applied?
- What finish product, sheen and coat count are specified?
- How are protection, cleanup and a final walkthrough handled?
Our cedar-versus-stucco guide explains why surface type also matters.
Start online. Confirm at your home.
Use our exterior calculator to explore the services you want. Include optional pressure cleaning if you want to discuss those areas too. The calculator’s total is preliminary; Vidar reviews measurements, condition, access and the materials before confirming your written estimate.
To get the conversation started, send your address, photos of each side, the surfaces you want included and your preferred timing. If you have paint names or previous invoices, those can help identify the existing finish.
Questions homeowners ask
Can I get a firm price from one photo?
A photo can help start the conversation, but it may not show the surface condition or all the areas included. An inspection confirms the final scope and price.
Can I remove a wall or optional service to change the price?
Yes. Tell Vidar what you would like included or excluded, and ask for the revised scope in writing so the total matches your choices.
Is primer automatically included everywhere?
Primer is selected for the surface and its condition. The estimate should state the agreed priming or sealing work so you know what is included.
