A fresh look starts above you.

An outdated popcorn ceiling can make a freshly painted room still feel unfinished. Removing that heavy texture creates a cleaner look and lets the walls, trim, and furnishings take center stage.

In this project, our We Paint Sarasota team uses a Festool PLANEX 2 sander connected to a dust extraction system. The removal is only part of the work: careful preparation and finishing turn the exposed surface into a ceiling ready for its new look.

From room protection to the final coat

Our popcorn ceiling removal process

01 / PROTECT

Prepare the room

We cover furniture and protect floors before work begins. Planning access and protecting the surrounding surfaces are part of the job, whether we are updating one bedroom or several rooms.

02 / REMOVE

Take down the texture

For suitable, non-asbestos surfaces, our PLANEX 2 and connected extractor help capture sanding dust at the tool. The ceiling’s condition and existing coatings guide the removal method.

03 / SMOOTH

Skim coat & refine

Removing texture can reveal uneven areas underneath. We address surface imperfections and apply skim coats to build a smoother finish, allowing the material to dry between stages.

04 / FINISH

Prime & paint

We prime the prepared surface and apply quality ceiling paint for an even appearance. Care around the ceiling edges, a final inspection, and cleanup complete the transformation.

The equipment behind the finish

Less dust. More attention to detail.

Dust extraction helps collect sanding dust as we work and supports a cleaner work area. Some dust can still escape, so careful room protection and cleanup remain part of every project.

The PLANEX 2 also has a built-in light ring that helps reveal uneven spots during sanding. Together with careful skim coating and preparation, it helps us work toward a consistent finish.

A few homeowner questions

How much does popcorn ceiling removal cost?

Ceiling area, height, existing paint, surface condition, and the amount of finishing work all affect the price. Start with our interior estimate calculator, or send Vidar a few photos. We confirm the scope and final price in person.

Can you remove painted popcorn texture?

Painted texture can need a different approach from unpainted texture. We assess the ceiling, any material-testing needs, and the preparation required before recommending a method.

What if my ceiling has water stains?

The source of moisture needs to be fixed first. Once the area is dry and sound, we assess any damaged material and select suitable preparation and stain-blocking primer before repainting.

Can you paint the walls at the same time?

Yes. Ceiling work can be planned alongside wall, trim, and door painting. Let us know which surfaces you want included so your estimate covers the whole room.
