Why cedar needs a thoughtful painting plan

A good exterior painting project begins before the first finish coat. With cedar siding, the condition of the wood and the existing coating help determine the preparation and products we recommend.

Our Sarasota project video takes you through the work behind a fresh exterior. Here is how inspection, priming and careful brushwork come together.

Step 1: Inspect, clean and prepare the siding

We start by looking for loose boards, open joints, peeling paint and damaged wood. Areas needing repair are identified before painting, so the finish goes onto a sound surface.

Dirt, mildew and loose coating need to be removed. Cedar calls for gentle cleaning: aggressive pressure can damage the fibers and drive water behind siding. A wood-appropriate cleaner, careful rinsing and adequate drying help prepare the surface for the next step.

Preparation also includes addressing loose paint, filling suitable nail holes and repairing failed caulk where appropriate. Drainage openings and joints designed to stay open should remain open. Windows, nearby surfaces and landscaping are protected during the work.

Step 2: Prime for cedar and the chosen finish

Cedar contains natural extractives that can show through coatings as brown or yellow discoloration. Bare wood and areas with staining may need a compatible exterior stain-blocking wood primer before painting. Existing paint must also be sound and compatible with the new coating.

We select the priming approach for the actual surface, follow the product’s drying requirements and allow the siding to dry sufficiently before coating. Moisture problems need attention before they are covered.

Step 3: Apply two finish coats with careful brushwork

Our painting process includes two finish coats, with application and recoat times matched to the selected product. We work in manageable sections, maintain a wet edge and give siding edges, corners and trim the attention they need.

Brushes and rollers help work the coating into the siding’s texture. Careful cutting in around windows and doors gives the completed exterior its clean, finished appearance.

The coating recommendation is part of the estimate. Premium exterior paints, including options such as Sherwin-Williams Duration, are considered within a compatible system for the home’s siding and existing finish.

Cedar painting questions

Can you paint over previously coated cedar?

Often, yes. First, the existing finish needs to be assessed for adhesion and compatibility. Loose coating, moisture problems and deteriorated wood must be addressed before repainting.

Will paint keep the natural cedar look?

Paint changes the color and covers the wood’s natural color variation, while surface texture may still show. If visible grain and a more natural appearance are your priorities, ask about a suitable stain system.

How much does cedar house painting cost?

Pricing depends on the paintable area, height, access, existing coating and preparation. Send photos and your address to start the conversation; an inspection helps confirm the scope and written estimate.

Can we start while I’m out of town?

Yes. Send your property address and recent photos. We can discuss the project remotely and use available property imagery for preliminary planning, then arrange an inspection to confirm the condition and final price.
